What is the Difference Between Freestanding and Under-Bench Dishwashers?

Choosing the right dishwasher isn’t just about size or features — it’s also about how it fits into your space and lifestyle. Two of the most common types on the market are freestanding and under-bench (sometimes called built-under or built-in) dishwashers. Both have their benefits, but understanding the key differences can help you make the best choice for your home.

Freestanding Dishwashers:

Flexible and User-Friendly freestanding dishwashers are exactly as they sound — standalone units that don’t require built-in cabinetry. They’re a popular choice for renters, renovators, or anyone looking for a quick and easy setup.

Advantages:

·         Versatile placement: Can be installed almost anywhere with access to water and drainage.

·         Simple setup: Easy to install and move if needed — no cabinetry work required.

·         User-friendly controls: All functions and settings are located on the front panel for easy access.

·         Under-bench installation: Freestanding dishwashers can also be installed under-bench.  Some models have a removable worktop (or lid) which can be removed to suit under-bench installation.

Considerations:

·         Aesthetic fit: Freestanding units may not blend seamlessly into your kitchen, as  gaps around the appliance can affect the overall look.

Under-Bench dishwashers

Under-bench dishwashers also known as built-in or built-under dishwashers, are designed to be installed under your benchtop and integrated into your cabinetry. They offer a streamlined appearance and are a great option for custom kitchen layouts.

Advantages:

·         Seamless integration: Sits flush with your cabinetry for a clean, modern look.

·         Space-saving: No exposed gaps, which helps maximise usable kitchen space.

Considerations:

·         Service Connections and Cabinet Opening: Requires proper plumbing, electrical connection, and cabinetry built to suit at the location of the dishwasher.

·         Fixed placement: Once installed, they’re not easily moved — better suited for long-term setups as under-bench dishwashers are fixed to the surrounding cabinets.

·         Cost: Underbench dishwashers are typically  more expensive than their freestanding model equivalents. The additional cost can be between $100 and $400 depending on the make and model.

Which One Should You Choose?

Go for a freestanding dishwasher if:

·         You want easy installation and portability

·         You’re renting or planning to move in the near future

·         You are on a budget

Opt for an underbench dishwasher if:

·         You’re after a more integrated, seamless kitchen design

·         You’re renovating or building and can plan the space accordingly
